Families connect in the Dara Institute housing program

After sending his resume to the Dara Institute (formerly Saúde Criança) and talking to the coordinator of the Housing Program, mason Flávio, Mariana’s six-year-old father, got a job. “She offered me a job at the home of a family that is also supported here, as is mine,” he said. The masonry work was done at the home of Izabela, mother of Erik, aged nine.

Izabela said the home improvement brought a better quality of life for her family. “My house had a lot of infiltration. When it rained the water ran down the walls, but now when it rains, I am no longer worried. After the roof was made, the infiltration ended”, declared Izabela.

For a month, the mason and a helper made improvements to the house. “I raised brick, put the roof on, painted the interior of the house, made a staircase and part of the renovation of the external area,” said Flávio. For Izabela, the stairs were the most important detail. She used to walk around with her son on her lap and, after the improvements, she doesn’t make as much effort as before. “Now, I go up easy with Erik. It’s not that hard anymore,” she said, relieved.

Izabela has also transformed other areas of her life with the support of the Dara Institute. “After I got here, my life changed a lot. I am accompanied by a psychologist and, through the conversations, I manage to express a little of my situation. I improved internally”, said Izabela.

Flávio thanked the job opportunity and is already making plans for the future. “I’m going to put together a budget at another family’s house to do another job with the Housing Program,” he said happily.
